Melechet Shamayim

Just came across a very good blog that also focuses on Safrut. The author is very handy and like experiments, and I specially like his series about Gevil parchment. In fact, I will look for a Gevil on my upcoming trip to Jerusalem. The question is what I should write on it - I'm thinking maybe a Lamnatzeach (see post about it here), a psalm that was inscribed in David's shield for protection. It's short, easy to write and it will look stunning in Gevil.

Thanks for your kind words about my blog. If you can't find any gevil, I have several pieces left over I'd be happy to send you some to try out.

YK... this is interesting you bring this up, I was just reading in the Keset HaSofer and saw that Halacha LeMoshe MiSinai to write sefer Torah on Gevil, Tefilin on Klaf and Mezuzos on Duchsustus! Have you considered why things have changed?

Anon,

There's this halacha indeed but if you continue reading the Keset, he explains that the smoothest hyde to write today is klaf and that it is permissible lekatchila to use it if it's better.

He says that the halacha lemoshe misinai should not be interpreted that you can only write Torah in klaf. This halacha merely tells you that you cant write Torah is duchsustus. Read the keset carefully and if you want more explanations see Aruch hashulchan.
